What if the Opuntia cactus / prickly pear / would play a central role in our future?
This question inspired me to create these surreal landscapes using a hybrid of artificial intelligence, digital and analogue manipulation, in which the Opuntia Cactus and its many generated hybrids cactus are the main protagonist of an imagined future of our planet.
For Donna Haraway (Staying with the trouble 2026), speculative fabulation, is a type of “narration” that enables one to unfold new worlds through arousing an appetite for what’s possible, and the proliferating SFs (speculative fiction, situated feminisms, string figures) are important practices in research and everyday life. Rooted in storytelling practices, speculative fabulation defamiliarizes, queers perception, and disrupts habitual ways of knowing. Although speculative fabulations are fabulations, that does not mean they are incompatible with science facts. We need speculative thought to help us to imagine other configurations and stimulate knowledge making.

In these Reels I am sharing a new series of mysterious surrealist Opuntia landscapes (yet not published).

The collective of artists @Sos_cochichumbas wants to raise awareness on the disappearance of the prickly pear cactus on our island and on the main land due to a plague of cochineal.

This question inspired me to create these surreal landscapes using a hybrid of artificial intelligence, digital and analogue manipulation, with the aim of fostering new narratives and shifts in perspective in the face of ecological issues. “We need new stories that do not induce paralysis but invigorate imagination and encourage action” (#donnaharaway #annatsing)

The Opuntia cactus, or Nopal, is originally from Central America where it is considered an amazingly resourceful plant by Indigenous population. A great source of food for both humans and animals, rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, it is a natural anti- inflammatory and is used in traditional medicine to treat wounds, digestive issues, and diabetes. It can purify water and be planted in association with other plants to keep moisture and avoid soil erosion. Its fibres and mucilage glue can be used for construction, the fabrication of ropes and adobe. Today it is also used to create vegan leather.
The Opuntia cactus can reproduce itself through through self pollination as well as vegetative reproduction with just one of its pads directly rooting in the soil. It can hybridise with many other cactus species, spreading as hundreds of different varieties. Since the 16th century the Opuntia cactus has been imported and introduce to all continents to breed the precious red carmine cochineal, but its many uses are mainly unknown. Today its disappearance from our island is truly an ecological loss.

In these Reels I am sharing new surrealist landscapes yet not published, in which the prickly pear cactus is hybridising with many other cacti, reshaping the landscapes of our planet.

African wax prints are one of the multiple layers from Ghanaian culture I am exploring in this project.
Among the multiplicity of influences in the Makola market of Accra, African wax prints stand as an intriguing example of hybridization. The history of African wax prints is intricately weaved with colonialism and capitalism. It can be traced back to Indonesia and its hand-made batiks using hot wax designs and dying processes. The Dutch copied & industrialized this technique to produce their first batch of wax print in 1850. Since then millions of meters of “African Wax Prints” have been designed and sold to African countries becoming part of the African culture and identity. For more than a century, western designers have been creating collections of Wax Prints, mixing traditional Indonesian and Indian patterns with African patterns, colours, symbols and iconography, as well African history. Today we question the fact that these beautiful colourful designs could be a form of cultural appropriation born from this hybridization of techniques and influences. The Wax Prints have become such a part of the African culture that African themselves believe them to be African which is also deeply questioning the concept of identity.
The success of the wax print relied on the local market women who named the prints according to African traditions. They took control of the distribution on the continent influencing the designs. Market women or their clients would give a spontaneous name to a new design. The cloth then becomes a vehicle for messages, wearing them can be the expression of a romantic feeling, of an infatuation or of a political statement. This naming of the wax prints could be seen as a form of cultural re-appropriation.

In this super-imposition of layers, the black and white patterns suggest both my questioning of the history of exchanges between global north and global south, as well as the language of cloth and weaving. Patterns are the fabric of life and they are reflected in the art of weaving in all cultures across time and space. The symbolism of the loom could be seen as a space where polarities meet. The cross intersection between the warp and the weft is a universal symbol of human existence.
The verticality of the warp stands for the connection between past & future, earth & sky, body & spirit, evolution. While the horizontality of the weft suggests our connections to the world, the others, our community, giving & receiving, our shared human experience, the play of patterns in the fabric of life.
Weaving becomes a metaphor to understand the working of the universe and our place in it and our interconnectedness. Our ever evolving identities, the fabric of our being, are weaved from past to future by all the encounters and experiences on our life journey.

The relationships between global north and global south is such a difficult subject to understand. As a white privilege artist traveling through Ghana I could only experience a deep shift in my perspective. Looking at the world from this land was giving me a vivid sense of the rippling effects of colonialism, post colonialism, neo-colonialism, capitalism, and the intricate weaving of cultural, economic and ecologic inter-dependencies of our global world.

In this reels I use traditional weaving patterns from Ghana, this one, the zig zag is called NMKYIMMKYIM, and its meaning is “life is not a straight path…”

Themes of hybridisation, multiplicity, differences and identity have been omni present while traveling through Ghana, West Africa, this winter.
Postmodern philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s defends the idea that there is no such thing as “fixed” identity, rather life is an ongoing expression of multiplicity and differences, a constant becoming or birthing into our next metamorphosis, allowing a diversity of voices and identities to keep emerging.
Trying to grasp the complex cultural multiplicity in Ghana, the Makola market in Accra became a field of inspiration. All around the world traditional market places have been for centuries emblematic of the aliveness of our multiplicity, a self-organized space where humans meet to exchange and nourish from the diversity of their craftsmanship and creative inventiveness.
Makola market is a tentacular labyrinthine organism in which one immerse to be saturated with an overdose of colours, shapes, smells, people, sounds. Makola’s landscape is constantly morphing and moving, while some shops are fixed in concrete walls acting as landmarks, others are mounted and dismounted every day with makeshift structures, whilst many vendors are walking around carrying their goods on their heads and bodies.

In this reel I manipulate and superimpose layers of video shots from Accra Market with traditional black & white weaving patterns….
This traditional pattern is called NKYEMFRE NHYEHYEHOO and symbolizes a broken pot pieced back together and the art of handling difficult situations.

To tell the story of the Nopal cactus and the coch

To tell the story of the Nopal cactus and the cochineal insect we must start by honouring the “cosmovisión” of indigenous cultures in Central America who perceived the cosmos as a harmonious and interconnected entity where plants, animals, insects, humans, and celestial bodies, coexisted in a delicate balance. They have been mastering the art of breeding the cochineal insect on Nopal’s pads since centuries. The cochineal insect produces carminic acid, used as a valuable natural red dye for textiles, pottery, ceremonial body painting as well as natural medicine.
Following the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, the carmine red Cochineal pigment became a highly valuable trade commodity and a source of immense wealth for the Spanish Empire. Red has always been a powerful symbolic colour, representing love and war, blood and sacrifice, beauty and anger, revolution and progressive forces.

Living Red revisits the myriad uses of the Cochineal red pigment, which is notably less toxic (though not vegan) than synthetic red pigments. It can be employed in food, medicinal products, cosmetics, and fabric dyeing.
This work is part of the action of artist collective @sos_cochichumbas around the disappearance of the nopal cactus ( chumberas- prickly pears) in Ibiza, in Spain, in Maruecco, in Canaries islands, a plague that could soon spread through North Africa and Europe…
The death of this plant has been provoked by the introduction of a deadly cochineal (not the original one that produces the best carmine pigment) in a nature reserve on mainland Spain to eliminate Nopal cactuses considered invasive... Our goal is to obtain government action to protect this beautiful plant that has been part of our landscapes for 400 years.

To exploit the cactus’s potential for breeding the Cochineal insect and produce the coveted red carmine dye, European Colonizers imported the Nopal to Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. This is why today the Nopal Cactus is present on all continents’ temperate and hot climates. In many of these regions, the Nopal’s myriad other uses, well known by indigenous Mesoamerican cultures, remain often unexploited. Today in many countries the plant is labelled as invasive due to its remarkable resilience to heat and drought.

A few years ago in Spain, a new strain of lethal Cochineal was introduced by preservation administration to eradicate the Nopal cactus from a nature reserve considering it a non-native invasive plant. The propagation of this new breed of Cochineal, coupled with a staggering 50% decline in insect diversity in Spain, of which many are natural predators of the cochineal, has contributed to the actual plague that is decimating the Nopal cactus not only in Spain but also in Morocco and could potentially spread to other European and African countries. This is a notable loss of an amazingly resourceful plant that has been part of the aesthetic of our Mediterranean landscapes for the last 400 years.
The goal of @SoS_Cochichumba collective is to obtain a change of statue for the Nopal cactus to cease labelling it as invasive and legally allow proper action to be taken against the deadly spreading of the plague.

The Nopal cactus (Opuntia), Chumbera in Spanish, Prickly Pear in English, is highly resistant to draught and heat. It could very well be the perfect plant of the future in times of global warming.
This amazing and beautiful plant has a myriad uses long known by the indigenous cultures of Central America. The Nopal is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, both its pads and its pears can be eaten by both humans and animals. It can be used in cosmetics for its anti-aging and healing properties and in natural medicines for its anti-inflammatory and digestive properties.
Its fibres can be used to build homes and objects, or to make ropes and tools.
The Nopal is also be a potential source of biogaz and energy…

Death and rebirth are inherent in the cycles of life. The natural death of organisms contributes to the regeneration of the ecosystem, providing nutrients for new life to emerge. But today the disappearance of so many species, vegetal, insects and animals, is the symptom of a deep ecological disruption and imbalance. Human activities, ecological manipulation, habitat destruction, pollution, globalization and climate change, contribute to an accelerated and general loss of biodiversity. Today we talk about the Anthropocene: a term acknowledging that since the industrial revolution, humans are the primary drivers of geological and environmental change on a global scale.
Recognising the Anthropocene has implications for how societies approach environmental policies, conservation efforts, and sustainable development. It emphasises the interconnectedness of human activities with the Earth’s natural systems and our responsibility to ensure a sustainable future. For a natural rebirth or regeneration to occur, there needs to be concerted efforts towards conservation, habitat restoration, and sustainable practices.

After the conquest of Mexico the Nopal cactus a native species from the americas, has been imported to Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia to try breeding cochineal and produce the famous Carmín pigment.
The series Multispecies Hybrid Worlds imagine worlds where hybrid cactus species are transported across continents, reshaping the planet’s landscapes with new species, for better or worse?

The project draws inspiration from Donna Haraway, using both A.I. and internet to research the intricate “histories” of the Nopal and the Cochineal, I feed them in the form of “prompts” into AI-image generator to produce “speculative fabulations” /A type of “narration” that unfold new worlds arousing an appetite for what’s possible / in the form of images that I rework digitally. Multispecies storytelling is a contemporary non-anthropocentric way of thinking about nature. Multispecies perspectives address the challenges of climate change and the questions of landscape and land use.

What if the Nopal Cactus and the Cochineal insect were the main protagonists of our future?
‘Memories of the future’ is an artistic project I am developing as part of @sos_cochichumbas collective to sensitize the public to the disappearance of the Nopal cactus or Chumbera due to a plague of Cochineal on the island of Ibiza and mainland Spain.

The ancient PERFECT MATCH between the Nopal Cactus and the Cochineal insect is an opportunity for ‘multi species’ story telling.
The Mixtecs of Oaxaca developed the method to obtain the precious carmine pigment from the Cochineal and Nopal centuries before the Spanish conquest. A symbol of status, it was used by the nobility of Mexico’s Indigenous peoples in arts and rituals, dying garments, decorating ceramics and painting murals.
The carmine Cochineal insect was cured on Nopal pads and harvested for its pigment.
After the Spanish conquest this red pigment became so prized that, after gold and silver, it was probably the most valuable thing the Spaniards found in Mexico. It helped build the wealth of Spain and of many Mexican cities like Oaxaca.

In Spain the Nopal cactus or Chumbera were imported 500 years ago from Mexico to breed Cochineal and became part of our landscapes. Today it is considered an invasive species due to its resistance to draught and a new deadly Cochineal has been introduced by nature reserves to eliminate the Nopal. Sadly this new cochineal is spreading all over Spain, Maruecco, and on our island of Ibiza killing all the beautiful Nopal cactuses that have been part of our landscapes for more than 400 years. The biodiversity of insects has gone down 50% in our region and the natural predators of Cochineal have also disappeared.

This relationship serves as a gateway to “tentacular thinking” researching why Nopals in Spain are now dying due to a plague of Cochineal, exploring historical ties between Mexico and Spain, cultural hybridization, biodiversity and human-non-human interactions.

The project draws inspiration from Donna Haraway, bridging science and art to imagine “futuries”. Using both A.I. and internet to research the intricate “histories” of the Nopal and the Cochineal, I create prompts for AI-image generator to produce “speculative fabulations” that challenge conventional narratives. Artworks are weaved from these images.

In the piece WITNESS OF CHANGE the archetype of the traditional “payesa” the wise peasant woman from the island of Ibiza /a disappearing human specie that used to be part of the local landscapes/ is now the witness of imaginary future worlds shaped by the Nopal cactus and the Cochineal insect. I previously embodied this archetypal character in performances and use my own silhouette to also introduce myself as an observer in the scenes.
